  • About Jesuit

    How long has there been Jesuits on this property and how much do they own?
    The Jesuits have owned (for the most part) 650 acres at this location since 1930 (96 years).
  • What about the diminishment of the Jesuit presence. Are the Jesuits going to sell the property?
    The Jesuits have made a commitment to retain the property. They will NOT be selling the property as long as the apostolates are viable and providing a service to the community. The Jesuit provincial continues to mission Jesuits to work here. Over the last number of years, we have established a board (consisting of three Jesuits and non-Jesuits who have the responsibility of governance of the property and its apostolates ministries. They are committed to retaining the Ignatian chrism, and an Ignatian presence in Guelph.
  • What do you mean by Novitiate?
    Novitiate is the first two years of training to become a Jesuit. After the two years, the trainees take bows of poverty, chastity, and obedience.
  • What is a Jesuit?
    A Jesuit is a member of the Society of Jesus, a Roman Catholic religious order which was established in 1534. They engage in a wide range of activities, from working on social justice issues to providing education and training to aspiring priests.
  • General

    Can I bring my pet on retreat?
    While we love animals we would not be able to accommodate your pet while you are on retreat.
  • Can I come at any time for a directed or undirected retreat?
    No. It depends on our programming and you would have to contact or registrar personally. However, you can walk the land any time, use the outside labyrinth or visit the Jesuit cemetery without having to contact anyone, unless coming in a group.
  • Do you have any private on ensuites?
    No. Our bathrooms are dormitory style with three shower stalls and 6 toilet stalls on each floor. We do have a fully private bathroom on the first floor with a bathtub.
  • Do you have to be catholic to book space at Loyola?
    Absolutely not. We support and encourage everyone to use our facilities.
  • Do you provide laundry service?
    We have self-serve laundry facilities located on the lower floor.
  • What do you do at the Ignatius Jesuit Centre?
    The Ignatius Jesuit Centre serves as a place of beauty and sustenance. Many different activities and projects are executed here at the centre. We have a retreat, conference and training centre known as Loyola House. Also on site we have a farm, known as the Ignatius Farm. The farm use organic and is home to many different animals and the community shared agriculture project. We also have a business centre, called Orchard Park Office Centre that is home to many regional businesses and entrepreneurs. The centre is located on 240 hectares of beautiful land which includes a pond, orchards, walking trails and a student retreat house known at The Villa. Other projects that take place at the centre are the plant an old growth forest project and the ecology project.
  • What is a directed retreat?
    Like most retreats, the environments will be one of prayerfulness and silence; the focus is a upon the presence and activity of god in your life. Each retreatant will be with a spiritual director on a daily basis and the rest of the time will be theirs to be on their own in silence. Prayerful reflection with sacred scripture is the usual setting for this process. There is no preset pattern for directed retreat.
  • What is the cost?
    We have a standard accommodation package of $115 nightly which includes three meals and refreshment breaks daily as well as the use of the entire house.
  • What program would be best for me?
    The programs tend to build sucstansible. If you have not made a silent retreat you might want to start there. Perhaps a shorter one at first and then a longer one. After that you might be interested in some of our other programs for doing retreats and spiritual direction.
  • What time are meals served?
    Breakfast 8:00 AM, lunch 12:30 PM and dinner 5:30 PM.
  • Where should we put out linens on the day of departure?
    In the linen room located on each floor.
  • Who can come to the Ignatius Jesuit Centre?
    Basically anyone. We are open to all faiths, and nonbelievers. The various programs on the property are diverse and usable to all.
  • Retreat Meals

    Can we bring in our own food?
    We don't permit outside food as we have a fulltime professional kitchen staff that will prepare the meals.
  • Can you accommodate my dietary needs?
    We are well versed in vegetarian, gluten free, vegan and pretty much any special requirements you might have.
  • Do you use food from the land here?
    Yes, whenever possible.
